June 6, 2025
The Department of English is proud to announce the release of Volume 9 of Cardinal Compositions—an open-access, online journal that celebrates the outstanding writing and multimodal work of undergraduate students in the Composition Program.
This year’s edition also features select pieces from ENG 202: Introduction to Creative Writing, expanding the journal’s range and spotlighting the creative talents of UofL students.
Carefully curated by a dedicated team of student editors, this volume of Cardinal Compositionsshowcases a dynamic mix of genres that reflect the intellectual and artistic achievements from the 2024–25 academic year. The editorial team evaluated submissions across a variety of formats and ultimately selected:
Five traditional essays, tackling topics from empathy in social work to Tai Chi as a mental health strategy
Three multimodal projects, including a video presentation and two infographics on minority writing and technical communication
Two instructor assignment sheets, offering insight into how students are guided through major research and presentation tasks
Two creative writing pieces: a reflective poem titled Ode to my grandparents’ living room by Piper Greeby and a short story titled Chasing Meaning by Julian Coleman
This edition is a testament to the intellectual depth and creative range of UofL undergraduates. Editor-in-Chief Jaimeson Oakley and the editorial team—Melissa Zipper (Instructional Editor), Rebekah Crosson (Multimodal Editor), Paige Enlow (Essay Editor), and Andrew Messer (Creative Writing Editor)—have invested significant time and care into making this volume a meaningful representation of the year’s best work. Special thanks also go to Simone Jackson for providing the volume’s stunning cover art.
“The University of Louisville is home to exceptional students and faculty, and we hope this issue highlights some of the best among them,” Oakley wrote in the editor’s letter.
